Description of rotation:

This rotation will afford the PGY-3 exposure to the diverse pathology of Elmhurst Hospital primarily in the outpatient, clinic setting. Mornings will be spent in the clinic (adult and pediatric) with coverage as necessary for urgent Emergency Department neurology consultations. Afternoons will be spent in outpatient Neurology, including general clinic, Neurophysiology lab, and pediatric neurology clinic. Short- and long-call coverage of the inpatient neurology service will round out the Elmhurst Clinic rotation and provide continuity with the inpatient service. Continuity clinic at Mount Sinai (Site 1) will be maintained during this rotation.

Goals

  1. To instruct residents in principles of general outpatient neurology as well as subspecialty outpatient neurology including diverse conditions inherent in the international Elmhurst population.

  2. To increase residents’ neurological knowledge through clinical experience, case-based directed reading and relevant literature searches and discussion.

  3. To provide exposure to community outpatient care for patients with neurologic disease

Objectives

The resident will:

  • Learn to take a thorough history and perform a focused, appropriate exam on general neurology outpatients as well as subspecialty neurology outpatients (Patient Care)

  • Learn to accurately and efficiently gather patient information in the outpatient, subspecialty clinic setting (Patient Care)

  • Participate in educating neurological patients and their families about neurological illness (Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Learn to effectively communicate with all patients despite language and cultural barriers (Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and challenges of and serve as an advocate for the vulnerable Elmhurst Hospital patient population (Professionalism, Systems-Based Practice)

  • Learn the basic technical and clinical aspects of interpreting NCS/EMG by observing these tests performed by a technician, and precepting with a neurophysiologist (Medical Knowledge)

  • Demonstrate compassion, respect and cultural sensitivity towards neurological patients and families (Professionalism)

  • Learn techniques to ease anxiety and establish trust with pediatric neurology patients (Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Understand how outpatient subspecialty neurology care fits into the organization of neurological health care delivery (Systems-Based Practice)
