Elmhurst Floor:

The inpatient Neurology Service at Elmhurst Hospital cares for stroke and general neurology patients in both a regular medical-surgical unit (the B4 unit) and in an acute care step-down unit (the A4 unit). The team is composed of a Neurology Attending, one PGY-3 neurology resident, 1-3 PGY-1 Internal Medicine or Psychiatry interns. There are 1-2 Mount Sinai medical students and one visiting medical student. Attending rounds occur on weekdays, and one weekend day depending on the patient census. The PGY-1 interns are responsible for daily physical exams, gathering interim histories, laboratory findings, and radiographic information and presenting it to the team. The medical students assist them in collecting this information for the patients they are following. The PGY-3 neurology resident oversees this process closely, and helps to coordinate care and make management decisions in conjunction with the Attending. Teaching occurs throughout rounds, including at the bedside. At EHC, patients are sometimes admitted under “Alternate Level of Care,” or ALC, while awaiting disposition. ALC patients require 1 intern note per week in addition to once weekly lab draws if clinically appropriate.

In addition, the PGY-3 is responsible for seeing all ED consults called during the day. During the morning while the team is still rounding, if the consult is not urgent, the Floor resident may give the consult to the Clinic resident. All stroke codes, regardless of patient location, are seen by the Floor resident.
