Sinai Floor

Sinai Floor:

The Floor Service, which cares for patients with non-cerebrovascular neurologic problems, consists of a Neurology Attending, one PGY-4 neurology resident, one PGY-2 neurology resident, and (ten months out of the year) a PGY-1 psychiatry resident. There are 1-2 Mount Sinai third-year medical students and occasionally a visiting medical student from both US and foreign medical schools. During the summer months, there may be a fourth year Mount Sinai medical student Sub-I. The PGY-2 neurology resident and PGY-1 psychiatry resident are responsible for collecting patient histories, exam findings, laboratory results and radiographic information and for presenting this information to the team. Medical students often help with information gathering for the patients they are following. The team works together to compose treatment plans in conjunction with the Floor Attending. Teaching occurs throughout rounds by both the Attending and the PGY-4 resident at the bedside and, more formally, after patient care work has been completed.

The Floor team also cares for patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), either electively or from the ED. As above, overseen by the PGY4, junior residents and medical students follow these patients, gather information on them each morning, and present that information to the Epilepsy attending during Epilepsy rounds ~11AM. For epilepsy patients, residents must document any seizure activity and may need to discuss with the Epilepsy attending throughout the day and night to adjust medications and other management.

The PGY-2 Neurology resident, Psychiatry intern, and occasional Sub-I's are responsible for carrying out the daily patient care responsibilities such as writing progress notes, writing orders, gathering data for work and teaching rounds and maintaining Sign-outs. On new patients, the junior resident/sub-I writes an admission note, admission orders, and an Epic Signout.
