Neuromuscular Exam (MG, GBS):
Neck flexion (strength), shoulder shrug (tests C3-C5, same as diaphragm)
-
Respiratory function:
Formally: NIF and VC
Informally: counting up in 1 breath (20 = good) and neck flexion
Cough (ask pt to cough vigorously)
Swallow (do dysphagia screen w/ water)
Breathing while supine (abdominal muscles have to work more against gravity when supine)
The above 5 points are key in assessing whether someone is in neuromuscular crisis
Ptosis
Sustained upgaze
EOM (double vision?), check strength of squint
Puff cheeks, bite strength (bite a tongue depressor), push tongue into cheek
