Goals and Objectives for Outpatient Elective Rotation (PGY-2)

Description of rotation:

The resident will rotate through an outpatient neurology clinic of their choice, either general neurology or one of the many subspecialty clinics. The resident will gain a better understanding of the chosen specialty and increase their knowledge and skills in that area.

Goals

  1. To improve the resident's clinical knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and treatment of subspecialty neurology outpatients.

  2. To provide exposure to comprehensive/interdisciplinary care for patients with neurologic disease, (i.e. multiple sclerosis).

  3. To foster personal development in considerations of career options, academic/research opportunities, and fellowship applications in the neurologic subspecialities.

Objectives

The resident will:

  • Accurately and efficiently gather patient information in the outpatient, subspecialty clinic setting (Patient Care)

  • Effectively present patient history and exam information to preceptors(Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Assist in the development of outpatient management diagnostic and therapeutic plans (Patient Care)

  • Develop clinical knowledge in the resident's chosen area(s) of outpatient, subspecialty neurology. These areas may include movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neurophysiology, headache or behavioral neurology (Medical Knowledge)

  • Become familiar with Mount Sinai's outpatient medical records and ordering system (Epic) (Practice-Based Learning and Improvement)

  • Communicate effectively with patients and families (Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Demonstrate respect for patient confidentiality and autonomy (Professionalism)

  • Understand how outpatient subspecialty neurology care fits into the organization of neurological health care delivery (Systems-Based Practice)
