Goals and Objectives for Outpatient Subspecialty Clinics (PGY-2)

Description of rotation:

At the beginning of the resident’s PGY-2 year, the resident will rotate through several of the neurology subspecialty outpatient clinics, including Multiple Sclerosis, Movement Disorders, Pain and Headache and Behavioral Neurology, gaining clinical knowledge and insight into the services available at Mount Sinai. The resident will be able to practice history-taking and neurological examination skills under the guidance of attending neurologists.

Goals

  1. To instruct residents in principles of general outpatient neurology as well as subspecialty outpatient neurology including movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, headache and behavioral neurology.

  2. To increase residents’ neurological knowledge through clinical experience, case-based directed reading and relevant literature searches and discussion.

  3. To provide exposure to comprehensive/interdisciplinary care for patients with neurologic disease, (i.e. multiple sclerosis).

Objectives

The resident will:

  • Learn to take a thorough history and perform a focused, appropriate exam on general neurology outpatients as well as subspecialty neurology outpatients (Patient Care)

  • Learn to accurately and efficiently gather patient information in the outpatient, subspecialty clinic setting (Patient Care)

  • Begin to participate in educating neurological patients and their families about neurological illness (Interpersonal and Communication Skills)

  • Demonstrate compassion, respect and cultural sensitivity towards neurological patients and families (Professionalism)

  • Demonstrate respect for patient privacy and confidentiality (Professionalism)

  • Understand how outpatient subspecialty neurology care fits into the organization of neurological health care delivery (Systems-Based Practice)
