Preface to the Twelfth Edition of the Resident Handbook:
The Neurology Resident Handbook was originally created in 2010 in collaboration with Dr. Megan Alcauskas (class of 2009). It has been again revised, enhanced, and transitioned to this digital format for the 2020 edition. Drs. Kapil Gururangan, Daniella Sisniega, Daniel Chiu, and Sarah Levy (class of 2022) led the revisions and updates for this edition.
The Program section covers practical aspects of the residency program itself. While much of this section provides guidance for the PGY2s, it also includes information on credentialing for Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) and the Bronx VA, guides for EHC/Bronx VA, and updates to our evolving schedule. We have updated rotation descriptions to reflect an increased residency size of 10 residents per year since 2018.
In the Clinical section, contains “the Sinai guide” to common neurologic diseases, including revised protocols, practice guidelines, templates for workups, and management plans for key neurologic conditions and presentations. This section of the Handbook was built by Drs. Doug Mayson, Sarah Zubkov, Wamda Ahmed, and Sonja Schuetz (class of 2013), and revised and expanded by Dr. Mayson with a series of Appendices covering practical tips including the use of inpatient Epic, and the inclusion of a “Crash Course in EMG.” Extensive updates to the stroke and tPA management sections were contributed by Dr. Hazem Shoirah (class of 2015).
Dr. Roger Cheng (class of 2016) compiled several appendices on use of Epic to admit and discharge patients, and Dr. José Montes-Rivera (class of 2014) compiled a primer on the Neurologic exam in Spanish, complete with phonetic pronunciations, which you will find at the end of this Handbook.
Should you spot anything erroneous, outdated, or otherwise inaccurate, please inform the your chiefs.
