Conferences at Mount Sinai:
Conferences are attended by all the residents on service at Mount Sinai.
Morning Report
8:00-9:00 daily during the week except Fri, Yahr Library (Annenberg 14). Morning Report is the pre-clinical teaching conference during which the nightfloat and/or post-call residents present 1-2 cases from the previous night to a faculty member for the purpose of improving their clinical knowledge as well as presentation and diagnostic skills. Cases are logged and reviewed in a “close the loop” session from 8-8:15am.
Noon Conference
12:00-1:00 daily during the week, Yahr Library. The Neuroscience at Noon Conference series comprises didactic lectures that include all divisions of neurology. Whenever possible, lectures will be followed by question-based learning and discussion.
Chief of Service Rounds
TBD
Neuromuscular Rounds
12:00-1:00, every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Yahr Library. During Neuromuscular Rounds, a member of the Neuromuscular faculty brings in an interesting patient, interviews and examines them and then discusses their findings along with relevant neurophysiological testing results.
Stroke Conference
12:00-1:00, two Fridays a month, Yahr Library. During Stroke Conference, MSH stroke faculty or visiting faculty will give about a particular topic in vascular neurology.
Outcomes Conference
12:00-1:00, approx. quarterly, Yahr Library. Chief-Resident led discussion of one or more cases from QA or where medical errors or sub-optimal outcomes provide teaching points. This is a quality-improvement (QI) educational exercise that all residents participate in, and should be reported as per ACGME requirements.
Grand Rounds
8:00-9:00, Fridays, Hess Auditorium at Mount Sinai Hospital, located on 1470 Madison Ave at 102nd St. The auditorium is on the 2nd floor in seminar room B. During Grand Rounds, a prominent speaker from Mount Sinai or another institution discusses their research.
Stroke/ED conference
Twice per year. Interdisciplinary opportunity to discuss cases that highlight the importance of emergency and neurological management.
Neurocritical/ED conference
Twice a year. Interdisciplinary opportunity to discuss cases that highlight co-management of emergency team and neurology team in critically ill patients.
QA Meeting
12:00-1:00, one Wednesday per month, Annenberg 2 conference room. Chief residents and PGY-2s presenting cases attend. The involved PGY-2 will submit QA case write-ups to the QI chief the week prior to the monthly QA meeting. Appropriate cases including every mortality case (regardless of cause of death), and any case that didn't meet standard of care for any reason.
This is a quality-improvement initiative for all residents, which seeks to bring about change that improves patient care at every level of our service. Highly relevant cases will then be discussed with the entire Neurology program at quarterly “Outcomes Conference,” as above.
Junior resident conference
Junior (PGY-2) residents will present one 30 minute session during their PGY-2 year to the other residents and interview applicants. Sessions may be clinical or academic. Clinical sessions should focus around a difficult case in order to showcase the resident's clinical descriptive and analytical skills, describe the challenges encountered, and review relevant literature that informed patient care and treatment. Academic sessions depend on the resident's academic and research interests. This presentation should be reported as part of ACGME-required Scholarly Activity.
Senior resident conference
Senior (PGY-4) residents will be required to present one 40 minute session during the year to other residents and faculty members. Topics will typically be relevant to their chosen subspecialties, research projects or areas of academic interest. Residents are expected to process and synthesize a broader corpus of knowledge, highlight shortcomings of current knowledge and target areas of future research, and communicate their conclusions. This presentation should be reported as part of ACGME-required Scholarly Activity.
Journal Club
Dr. Lublin facilitates these session to teach us how to critically analyze clinical trials. The juniors who will be presenting monthly are notified by the chief resident at the start of each month. It is their responsibility to choose an article (PGY-4s are happy to help) and send it to all residents as well as Dr. Lublin in 1 week prior to the session.
