Goals

  1. To teach residents to effectively supervise the junior resident in providing comprehensive and effective patient care overnight, both to inpatients on the neurology service and to patients seen in consultation in the Emergency Department and on other inpatient services.

  2. To foster the teaching of the junior neurology residents the clinical knowledge and skills to function independently in the hospital while on-call and on nightfloat.

  3. To teach residents to perform consultative duties and communicate collaboratively with members of other healthcare teams in the care of patients with neurologic complaints in the acute/overnight care setting.

Objectives

The resident will:

  • Teach the junior neurology resident how to take a comprehensive neurological history and perform a thorough neurological examination (Patient Care)

  • Teach the junior neurology resident how to make organized and comprehensive neurological case presentations (Patient Care)

  • Help the junior neurology resident to develop methods of effectively triaging competing demands on their time, including consultation requests and floor work (Patient Care)

  • Supervise the junior neurology resident's work with consulting teams such as the ED and other medical services in order to provide optimal medical care (Patient Care)

  • Teach the junior neurology resident how to recognize neurological emergencies, how to begin basic therapy and how to contact the appropriate supervising neurologist in those circumstances (Patient Care)

  • Help the junior neurology resident to prepare and present adequate and effective sign-out to the call and day teams, recognizing the nightfloat resident's role as an extension of the healthcare team (Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Systems-Based Practice)

  • Teach the junior neurology resident how to effectively coordinate patient care in the Emergency Department (Systems-Based Practice)

  • Introduce the junior neurology resident to what hospital resources are available during off-hours and how to appropriately utilize them (Systems-Based Practice)
